When a poker player wins a WPT Championship, the prize package includes an entry in the WPT World Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The World Championship is underway this week, and going into Day 4 of the 7 day event, the two champions of WPT events held at Playground Poker are both among the leaders with just 24 players left in the field.
Amir Babakhani, the winner of the WPT Canadian Spring Championship earlier this month, is the current chip leader with 1,220000 chips (122 big blinds). Playground Poker Players Club member Jonathan Roy, the winner of the inaugural WPT Montreal in November 2012, is sixth with 824000 chips (82 bb).
The remaining field is very strong, as usual for this event. Jonathan will start the day on table 33 along with such players as Andrew Lichtenberger (aka luckychewy), Chino Rheem, Jake Cody, and Andy Frankenberger. Amir starts Day 4 on table 34 and will be playing with poker legend Daniel Negreanu and superstar Jason Mercier at his table.
Current WPT Player of the Year leader Matt Salsberg is out of the tournament, and if either Amir or Jonathan can win the event outright (2nd place isn’t enough), they would pass Matt for the POY lead.
Play continues at 12pm (noon) Pacific Time (3pm EDT) in level 16 (blinds 5K/10K/a1K). You can follow all of the action on the WPT Live Updates site.
