    Event #1 Champion: François Gagné

    June 30, 2019 | 8:21pm | Playground

Event #1 of the June Power Weekend, the $200 + $20 Playground 200, more than lived up to its reputation as a player-friendly tournament that provides great value by drawing a huge field of 745 entries from five starting flights. As is often the case with this event, the starting flights drew progressively larger fields, and the result was a prize pool that easily surpassed the $100,000 guarantee.

Saturday’s Day 2 began with the 155 players who survived starting flights and continued for ten levels of hard-fought action. That field was reduced to the 26 players who returned today to compete for the championship.

The action started quickly this afternoon, with a flurry of eliminations in the early going. And the frantic pace continued all the way until the final table, however, the dynamics changed from there. The five-figure prizes at the top of the money list loomed large over the players and that led to a dramatic change in the pace of play. The players waited patiently for either good spots or good cards to play, but they were few and far between. Eventually, the cards brought out some premium hands, and each elimination was the result of a pre-flop all in.

When six players remained, there was an attempt at negotiating a deal to chop the remaining prize pool, but it did not come to fruition. It took one more elimination and the chips to level out before another round of negotiations got underway and were successfully completed. The result was a deal that saw the five finalists secure five-figure payouts and left $3,000 for the eventual winner.

The mood lightened significantly from that point on, and the chips started going in the middle a lot more easily. Steve Pouliot and Marcello Simonetti were eliminated in short order before the three-way battle between Shawn S, François Gagné and Shunn Jacques began.

Shawn had the lion’s share of the chips, but François doubled through him after a few orbits of play and did not look back from there. François used his new chip lead effectively to apply pressure to his opponents at every opportunity and went on to eliminate both Shawn and Shunn to take down the Playground 200. Congratulations!

Event #1 Champion: François Gagné, $19,820

    Runner up: Shunn Jacques, $12,335

The five finalists in the Playground 200 have reached consensus on an ICM chop of the remaining prize pool.

The chips leveled out somewhat since the last round of negotiations, and Mathieu Daigneault’s elimination in sixth place helped boost the numbers for the final five, so they were quick to come to an agreement.

According to the terms of the deal, the players will receive the following payouts, with an extra $3,000 reserved for the eventual champion.

After unsuccessful negotiations to chop the remaining prize pool and a lengthy period without any movement on the final table, there has been an elimination.

Mathieu Daigneault made his exit following a clash of pocket pairs where the chips made their way into the middle before the flop. In a scenario that played out twice already on Day 3 it was pocket nines against pocket kings. Daigneault held 9 of Spades 9 of Diamonds and ran into Francois Gagne’s King of Clubs King of Spades.

The window card showed a king, and there wasn’t much of a sweat from there. The board ran out King of Hearts Ace of Hearts 6 of Clubs 10 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds, sending Daigneault to the rail in sixth place. He will take home $5,280 for his final table appearance.

Following protracted negotiations to reach an ICM chop of the remaining prize pool, the action continues with six players remaining.

The players requested that the tournament staff pause the clock to see what king of numbers an ICM chop would provide, but after hearing the breakdown they were unable to reach consensus.

Only six players remain in contention in the Playground 200. The stacks are deeper than they were at the outset of the final table, but most hands are still being determined before the flop. The ICM considerations are clearly having an influence at this stage, as their is a gap of more than $20,000 between the next elimination and the first-place prize, which has forced the players to approach each hand with the utmost caution.

The set up bore a remarkable resemblance to the last elimination, however, a different fate was in store for the player holding pocket kings this time.

It was another pre-flop all in featuring pocket nines against pocket kings. Fadi Haddad moved all in from under the gun with 9 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs for roughly 1.3 million in chips. The other players folded quickly until the action made its way to Francois Gagne in the big blind, who made the standard call with King of Spades King of Diamonds. But in this hand, neither player connected with the board and the kings stood tall to take down the pot and send Haddad to the rail in seventh place. He will take home $4,370 for the final table appearance.

Rodrique Gagnon waited patiently and found a good spot but ultimately came up short on the final table of the Playground 200. Gagnon was down to only a handful of chips earlier in the day and managed to claw his way back into contention. He stayed out of the action for the most part and managed to double up seemingly each time he got a premium hand. But the latest premium hand would be his last in this event.

The action folded to Gagnon in the cutoff when he moved all in for 740,000. The button and small blind folded, but the big blind, Mathieu Daigneault, quickly made the call. Hands were tabled to show that it was pocket pair against pocket pair, and Gagnon had the best of it.

Gagnon: King of Diamonds King of Hearts

Daigneault: 9 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts

Board: 9 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts 5 of Clubs

The nine in the window turned the tables in Daigneault’s favour, and the run out did not provide the help Gagnon needed. Gagnon’s eighth place finish will earn him $3,480.

Following Jean-Rene Lafleur’s elimination in tenth place, the seating redraw was issued for the final table. While Lafleur made his way to the tournament desk to collect his $2,160 payout ticket, the players took their new seats and prepared for the final stretch of their Playground 200 journeys.

On the first hand dealt at the final table, Wayne Derouchie had his run ended by Steve Pouliot following pre-flop all in. Derouchie was low on chips and decided to make his move with pocket threes, however, Pouliot woke up with pocket tens and made the easy call. The runout, Ace of Spades 2 of Spades King of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds, did not provide the help Derouchie needed and he was eliminated in ninth place. He will collect $2,610 for his final table appearance.

In an exciting turns of events, two players were just eliminated on back-to-back hands at the same table.

Now that the blinds have reached 40K/80K, pre-flop all ins had become the only option for a number of players. On the first hand, Vivo L, seated in the cut off, moved all in for roughly one million in chips. The player on the button made a painstaking fold after calling time on himself before the action made it to the big blind, Shawn S, who quickly made the call.

Shawn: 10 of Clubs 10 of Diamonds

Vivo: Ace of Diamonds 9 of Hearts

Board: King of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts

And with that Vivo was eliminated in thirteenth place, earning him $1,720.

On the following hand, another pre-flop all in occurred between Ryan Lashmar and Mathieu Daigneault.

Lashmar, who was low on chips, tried to steal the blinds from early position by moving all in with Ace of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds. But Daigneault woke up with Ace of Clubs King of Clubs and made the easy isolation raise by moving all in. The board ran out ace high, and the king kicker sent Lashmar to the rail. He will take home $2,160 for his eleventh place finish.

The Playground 200 just lost another runner on the first hand back from the first break of the day. Peter Liakopoulos had started the day with a healthy stack but was unable to find his stride this afternoon and was eliminated in fifteenth place.

He will pocket $1,720 for his deep run in this event.

The field in the Playground 200 is now down to 15 players. The current chip leader, Steve Pouliot, is playing a stack of nearly triple the current chip average, giving him a comfortable lead over his nearest rival. But there is still a lot of poker to play this afternoon so his lead is far from insurmountable.

The chip average now provides roughly 20 big blinds so pre-flop decision making will dictate how things go from here. With the blinds as high as they are, things can change quickly so it is still anyone’s tournament.

    The current chip leader:

Following three in eliminations in quick succession, there has just been a full seating redraw for the remaining players.

The pressure of the blinds caught up with the shorter stacks in the field and forced a series of pre-flop all ins where the larger stack prevailed each time. Amjad G was eliminated in nineteenth place, earning him $1,170 in the process. Sacha Caya and Andre Landry were then eliminated on back-to-back hands; each player will collect $1,430 for their efforts.

Play continues on two tables with 16 players remaining.
