Event #4 Champion: Nick Nickoletopoulos
Event #4 of the July Power Weekend, the $200 + $30 + $100 PL Omaha Bounty Re-entry, got off to a slow start but steadily picked up pace until 71 entries were in on the action. The bounty hunting of the early levels led to 17 re-entries, enough to build a prize pool that easily surpassed tonight’s guarantee. The early levels were predictably loose for an omaha bounty tournament, as any four cards seemed good enough to play. This trend kept up for most of the night. The only exception was during the money bubble, where hand-for-hand play lasted for a little more than a level. The bursting of the bubble coincided with the creation of the final table, and the action picked right back up once the cards got in the air. At the outset of the final table, it seemed like anyone’s game, as several players were close to […]
The Champion of Event 3: Andrei Cernopolc
Event 3 was a $100 + $10 8-Max Re-entry tournament and attracted 88 entries, crushing the $5K guarantee. The 8-Max format is very popular among our players as it suggest slightly more aggressive play, as well as roomier tables. The final table welcomed a few very capable players, including Mitcheal Ferguson who final tabled both finished events in the July Power Weekend. Stuart Taylor is also accustomed to deep runs, while Mathieu Hébert, despite having been away from the tables for a while is known at Playground Poker Club as a sound tournament player. However, when the ICM chop was concluded, Stuart and Mathieu were out, while Mitcheal was crippled. Bruce Allali feasted on the final table until 4 players were left. Sébastien Éthier-Roy then ran up a good stack, but both of them got passed by Andrei Cernopolc, who led the event with 12 players left and ended up taking […]
Event #1 Champion: Steve Allard
Event #1 of the July Power Weekend, the $80 + $10 Mix Max Re-entry, brought out a field of 75 runners. The strong turnout built a prize pool that far exceeded today’s $4,000 guarantee. Today’s event put the players through their paces as they transitioned through several different formats, from 10-handed play at the start of the day through 8-, 6- and finally 4-handed play. Francois Meloche jumped out of the gate to start the day, building a huge chip lead before the first break. Meloche maintained his momentum after the late registration period ended and the tables began transitioning through the various formats. Benoit Larochelle Legrand shot up the leaderboard shortly before the second break of the day and managed to build a stack to rival Meloche’s not long after the players returned. After building up his stack, Larochelle kept his composure all the way to the final table. […]

Short Deck Hold’em: new name, same action!
At Playground Poker Club, the month of July came with a very exciting novelty, known around the world under Six-Plus Hold’em, Short Deck Poker or Short Deck Hold’em. We first introduced it under the name SIX-PLUS, which we felt was the most descriptive appellation. Some players, however, felt that it created unnecessary confusion with the 6-Max tournament, which incidentally runs on the same night. We always keep an ear out for player feedback. The tournament staff communicated your comments, and moving forward, the event will be listed under the more broadly used name, “Short Deck Hold’em”. The game’s action-inducing properties are transmitted from mouth to ear at high speed, and it’s quickly gaining popularity. The first installment saw 41 players jump in, and just one week later – Monday – that number was boosted to 59! There will be one more Monday night $50 + $10 NL Short Deck Hold’em […]

Bad luck is good luck!
Were the supposed effects of Friday the 13th just delayed a couple of days? For one player on Table 12, it definitely seems to have been the case – but that turned out to be a good thing! The rest of the players on the table definitely seemed to agree. The table was a $2/$5 table. Preflop action was pretty standard, with a raise to $35 and two callers – three players went to the flop. The flop was dealt: The first two players to act checked, then the player in the cutoff bet $60. Both of the other players called and the dealer laid out the turn: . Action checked around. Next up came the river card: . With the last of the community cards out, the action went wild. First to act was Matthew Y in Seat 5, who led out with a bet of $155. The player […]
Friday the 13th – are you a superstitious poker player?
Today is Friday the 13th, the unluckiest day on the calendar! According to some, this superstition has its roots in the Christian religion. On a Friday, they say, 13 men shared a meal on crucifixion day – the Last Supper. In the Middle Ages, most European people avoided new beginnings on a Friday. No weddings, no travel. Today, when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday, many Americans still refuse to fly or to buy. In 2004, it was estimated that between $800M and $900M were lost on Friday the 13th because people would not do the business that they normally would. Today, this number is probably in the billions. Now that’s a bad session! That date, however, is definitely not agreed upon by the whole world. Greeks are most wary of Tuesday the 13th. Why? On Tuesday, April 13 of the year 1204, Constantinople fell to the […]
New: the tournament countdown clock!
Almost 4 months ago, we launched a completely new playgroundpoker.ca website. The new site features easier navigation, simpler tools, and an overall better experience for our customers. Since it went live, our programming, design, and editorial teams have been working on the development of new features on the site to make it easier to use and more effective for players, including everyone from daily grinders, to weekend players, to event players who stay informed from afar. The latest addition is a new tournament countdown clock that appears on the main page of playgroundpoker.ca, allowing players to know exactly how much time they have before the start of the day’s events! And more – when a tournament begins, the clock turns red and counts down the amount of time left to late register! Players can now check their phone to know exactly how much time they have on the cash game […]
