25 players advance to Day 2 from flight 1D, Lem bags the lead

    October 27, 2019October 27, 2019 | 4:38am | Playground

Day 1D saw 178 players battle it out on the felt looking to bag for Day 2. The top 25 bagged and are now in the money. Tonight’s flight was full of great action. In the end, Soomnath Datta, who led the field for much of the evening, bagged the largest stack with 648,000 in chips. Sanford Tabin finished right behind him with 508,000, and Donald Lem bagged the third largest stack with 490,500 chips.

As the tournament went hand for hand, two players were very short and both were keeping a close eye on each other. Finally, Alberto Melendez picked up a premium hand and moved all in for 22,500. Ian Monahoyios made the call, as did Dionald Lem. The flop came Ace of Spades 3 of Hearts King of Hearts and the action went check-check. On the turn came the Queen of Hearts. Monahoyios checked and Lem put in a bet of 6,000. Monahoyios assumed that it was a thin value bet and he folded. The hands were opened:

Melendez: Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades
Lem: Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds

The river was the 2 of Clubs.

Melendez had waited and waited for a hand that he could shove, but in the end, it wasn’t meant to be.

The players will return to play Day 2 on Monday October 28th at 1:00pm. For a full list of Day 2 qualifiers, click here. (Tonight’s flight will be added to the list later on Sunday).

There are three more starting flights for the WPT500. Day 1F runs tomorrow at noon, followed by Day 1G at 5:00pm and the turbo Day 1H at 10:00pm.

The players have just returned from the fourth break of the night, and Soomnath Datta maintains the lead sitting on 342,000. With 34 players still in contention and 25 bagging for Day 2, play will most probably begin to slow down as everyone in the room is looking to get their guaranteed min-cash and return to keep the dream alive.

Usually flopping a set is a good thing. But not always.

With the blinds at 1,200/2,500, Michael Korovine opened under the gun to 6,000 and was called by his neighbour, Michael Brown.

The flop came 7 of Hearts Jack of Clubs King of Hearts, and Korovine led out for 5,000. Brown raised it up to 15,000, only to have Korovine shove over top. Brown snap called.

Korivine: 7 of Spades 7 of Diamonds
Brown: King of Spades King of Diamonds

Korovine thought he was in a great spot with a flopped set of sevens, but little did he know that Brown had flopped top set of kings! The turn was the 4 of Hearts and the river the 10 of Clubs. After losing the pot, Korovine was left with less than 1,000 in chips and busted out the next hand. A brutal flop, that’s for sure.

There are still 58 players grinding away and with play ending once only 25 remain, there is still a lot of poker to be played.

The chip average is now just over 90,000 and the leader is Soomnath Datta who has managed to build up a stack of 257,600. He is also the only player currently north of 200,000.

With the blinds at 800/1,600, Ralph Gidaro opened under the gun to 1,600 and was three-bet by Christina Knot in mid position. Soomnath Datta, who has the largest stack on the table, also called from the cut off position. When the action returned to Girado, he moved his stack forward with an all in bet. Knot made the call, and Datta shook his head and mucked his cards.

Girardo: Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds
Knot: King of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds

Girardo was clearly in the lead and when the board ran out 5 of Clubs 3 of Spades 8 of Clubs 4 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds, Knot shrugged her shoulders and picked up her belongings as she headed to the rail. Needless to say, Girardo was happy to pick a stack of chips to add to his pile.

There will be another break in a few minutes and we will be updating the leaderbaord when the players return to their seats.

The late registration and re-entry has come to a close and the total number of entries climbed to 178 players. As each flight plays down to 15% of the field, all of whom will all be in the money heading into day 2, the top 25 finishers tonight will bag & tag their Day 2 stacks.

With the chip average now at 44,500, one player has managed to go over the 200,000 mark; Frederick Moss from Quebec City (Qc) is in the lead with 202,500 chips. Mehdi Badreddine follows in second place with 150,100.

There are now 124 players in contention out of the original 171 entries with still over 30 minutes left in the late registration period. There are some healthy stacks in the room but a few players have started to feel the pressure with well below average stacks.

Action was opened to 1,100 by Jeremy Bertand who had calls from Jocelyn Arseneau and then by Robin Desgreniers in the small blind.  When it was John Paul Tobago’s turn to act in the big blind, he announced that he was all in. Bertrand and Arseneau moved out of the way but after noticing that Tobago only had about 12,000, Desgreniers decided to make the call.

Desgrenier: King of Clubs Jack of Clubs
Tobago: Ace of Spades 7 of Spades

Tobago’s timing was good as the board ran out 10 of Spades 4 of Diamonds 2 of Spades 3 of Spades 10 of Hearts giving him the nut flush and a badly needed double-up.

A break is coming up shortly and it will give us the opportunity to put together the second leaderboard of the evening.

Action was opened to 1,400 by Miraz Ullah in early late position only to be met by a re-raise to 7,400 by Guillaume Comtois in the small blind. When it was Nicholas Romano’s turn to act in the big blind, he moved his entire stack forward with an all in bet. Ullah made the call and Comtois, realizing he might have had some bad timing, let go of his hand.

Ullah: Queen of Spades Queen of Clubs
Romano: Ace of Spades Ace of Diamonds

The board ran out 8 of Spades 7 of Spades 4 of Spades King of Spades 5 of Hearts and Romano’s ace high flush beat Ullah’s queen high flush.

The WPT Montreal continues on this afternoon with Day 1D of the $500 + $50 WPT500.

This epic, multi-day event has already gathered 966 entries through five online flights and three live flights. So far, 94 players have advance stacks to Day 2, which will be held Monday, October 28 at 1:00pm. To see the combined Day 1 results, click here.

Each starting flight of the WPT500 starts players with stacks of 30,000 in chips to play through as many 30-minute levels as needed to reduce the field to one in seven entries, at which point the players will bag their chips for Day 2. Each Day 1 will play 10-handed and move to 9-handed play as soon as possible.

The WPT500 is an unlimited re-entry event, with unlimited re-entries permitted until the beginning of the ninth level of play on each Day 1, which will arrive at 9:30pm on Day 1D. Players can enter multiple starting flights but only their largest stack can be used on Day 2; all other qualifying stacks will be forfeited, but players will receive the associated cash prize for any forfeited stacks.

Day 1E Turbo goes tonight at 10:00pm. Good luck to all!
