Eskandar bags the lead as 26 advance to Day 2

    November 2, 2019November 2, 2019 | 4:12am | Playground

The first flight of the WPTDeepstacks kicked off today at 5:00pm and when the late registration period came to an end, there were a total of 149 entries (including 25 re-entries) playing for the $500,000 guaranteed prize pool. The field attracted many local and international pros and saw players who had busted out of Day 2 in the Main Event join the action as the evening progressed.

Rami Latif was in control through the first two breaks of the evening but ultimately fell short of finding a bag. It was Lam Nguyen who then took matters into his hands and led the field through the next two breaks of the evening. Late in the game, with only one level left to play, a massive hand took place when Patrick Eskandar picked up pocket aces and ended up all in against Michael Foley holding pocket kings. That hand ended up propelling Eskandar to the top of the field and in the end, he bagged the largest stack, a healthy 442,200 chips. Lam Nguyen ended up finishing in second place with 348,000.

When the players return on Sunday at 2:00pm for Day 2 the blinds will be at 1,500/3,000.
(NB: the schedule has been changed from the posted time of 1:00pm due to the late finish time of the 5:00pm starting flight in order to help accommodate the players who play Day 1C tomorrow)

Day 1B takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 12 noon, and Day 1C, the final starting flight, is at 5:00pm. Day 2 is on Sunday at 2:00pm where they will play down to a final table, and Day 3 takes place on Monday at 1:00pm.

The top five stacks that were bagged were:

    1. Patrick Eskandar, 442,200 (147 BB’s)
    2. Lam Nguyen, 348,000 (116 BB’s)
    3. Jiachen Gong, 230,700 (77 BB’s)
    4. Senthuran Vijayaratnam, 217,900 (73 BB’s)
    5. Medhat Ramzy, 209,000 (70 BB’s)

Here are some photos of the players who bagged the larger stacks tonight:

With the blinds at 1,000/2,000, the action opened under the gun by Patrick Eskandar who bumped it up to 5,300. Michael Foley was next to act, and he spent time thinking it through and a few seconds later he called. It then folded around to George Petten in the big blind who three-bet to 14,000. Back to Eskandar, he tanked a bit before finally four-betting to 43,000. It was now on Foley to act, he asked Eskandar if he only had one stack of red 5,000 value chips and as he looked over at his stack, he finally made the call. That put a decision onto Petten and he went into the tank for almost two full minutes, until ultimately he folded his hand and the two players went heads up to the flop.

The flop came Queen of Spades 9 of Spades 10 of Spades and Eskandar moved all in. Foley snap called and the hands were tabled:

Eskandar: Ace of Clubs Ace of Diamonds
Foley: King of Spades King of Clubs

The table and the two players in the hand held their breath as Foly had all kinds of outs and he had the King of Spades while Eskandar had no spade. The dealer proceeded to turn the Queen of Diamonds, followed by the 10 of Diamonds on the river and Eskandar’s pocket rockets held against Foley’s kings. Once the stacks were counted, Eskandar had 155,000 which covered Foley by just over 10,000 chips. Foley was unfortunately sent to the rail just shy of making Day 2. A cooler for sure.

As Eskandar was pulling in the pot, Petten let it be known that he had folded pocket jacks. Although we never saw his hand, after the two minute tank before folding, it seemed to make reasonable sense.

The players have just had their last break of the night and there are now just two more levels of play before the remaining players bag for Day 2. With an average stack now just over 120,000, Lam Nguyen, who has had a long day as he also played Day 2 of the Main Event earlier today, is still in the lead with a healthy 344,900 (172.5 BB’s). Two new names have appeared on the leaderboard; Steven Tripp is now in second place with 249,600 (125 BB’s) followed by Gonzalez Hernan with 240,800 ( 120 BB’s).

Some of the recent bustouts include: Sean B., Mitchell Dredge, Charles L. B., Karim-Olivier Kamal, Chanracy Khun, and Said El-Yousfi.

The tournament is now in level 12 and with only 43 players still in the running the tournament is down to five tables. It appears that the big stacks belong to Lam Nguyen, Gonzalez Hernan, Jiachen Gong, and Senthuran Vijayaratnam. There is a break coming up soon which will allow us to count the stacks and put together another leaderboard.

After the last break ended the late registration period came to a close and Day 1A officially has 149 entries (including 25 re-entries), making it a successful first starting flight. If this is any indication of what tomorrow’s flights will bring, the WPTDeepstacks Event #6 should well surpass the guaranteed $500,000 prize pool.

There is a now one player who has managed to amass a stack over 200,000; Lam Nguyen leads with a chip stack of 203,800 chips (204 BB’s). He is followed closely in second place by Raymond Latinsky playing 191,8001 (192 BB’s).

There are now 87 players remaining from the 118 total entries as the players are in level five. Late registartion remains open until the start of level 13 at 11:30pm, and with the slow blind structure, and the current chip average just slightly more than 40,000, it is still a great time to jump into the action where you start with 30,000 chips.

The Team WPT has been in the house all week at Playground working with the poker management team from Playground ensuring that all runs smooth for the players. Here are team members Tony Dunst (TV commentator), Alex Gray (Royal Flush crew member) and Carol Jaka (Global Events Manager) alongside Playground manager Hugo Fontaine, welcoming the players and announcing the re-start after the last break:

The chip average is currently just over 35,000 and there are many players that have started to chip up, however one player has managed to break the 100,000 mark to become the clear leader: Rami Latif is playing a stack 137,525 chips and is way out in front of the second place runner, Giuliano Lentini, who is playing a stack of 89,975 chips.

There has been a great turnout so far with already 81 players in the field (and the first re-entry just took place as well…)! The timing of the first starting flight could not have been better as players who may have run into some bad luck in Day 2 of The Main have been entering the WPTDeepstacks and are hoping to make this the event their championship run.

Don’t forget that the blind structure is super slow with 40 minute levels and late registration remains open until the start of level 10 at 11:30pm.
