Mansour bags the lead on Day 1G

    August 25, 2019 | 10:21pm | Playground

Day 1G brought out a huge field of 683 entries that battled it out for 17 levels of play. Following less hand-for-hand play than anyone in the field expected, 103 players advanced from this flight.

The fast and loose approach seen throughout the flight was maintained all the way to end. The players had just returned from their fourth break of the day when 107 players remained. From there, it did not take long to send the field into Day 2 and the money. The bubble hand was a heads-up pot where all the chips went in on the flop. Following the conclusion of play on the other tables, the hands were revealed to show top pair against second pair on a relatively dry board. But the run out turned the tables and brought about the final elimination of the day.

Three players – Steve Mansour, Joshua Marr and Tibor Bizony – bagged more than 300,000 in chips to put themselves in a great position to start tomorrow’s Day 2. The complete list of Day 1 results can be found here. The action will resume for Day 2 tomorrow at noon.

    Steve Mansour

The field is only four eliminations away from bagging chips for the day and reaching the money. The pace of play maintained a brisk pace in the lead up to the last break, contrary to most expectations. But things are likely to grind to a (near) halt now that the bubble is so close.

The blinds have caught up to the field, as the chip average now only provides about 25 big blinds, meaning that many players are feeling lots of pressure every time the button makes its way around the table.

Here are the current chip leaders:

After 14 levels of play on Day 1G, the field has been reduced to only 132 players out of 683 total entries. There is now a huge gap between the big and small stacks in the field, but the slow structure makes it possible for the shorter stacks to remain patient and pick their spots carefully. In the meantime, the big stacks in the field are taking the opportunity to play lots of hands and pressure their opponents at every chance, an approach brings risks of its own but exploits the dynamics of this starting flight. The top 103 finishers will qualify for Day 2 and reach the money, giving each hand greater importance as the flight continues.

Here’s an updated look at the field:

    Gerontakos leads after 12 levels

Less than 200 players remain on Day 1G. Vasilios Gerontakos is our current chip leader, who is sitting comfortably with a stack of more than triple the current average. Many players are keeping their heads safely above water with stacks of more than double the chip average, but everything can change quickly in tournament poker so there players will have to stay sharp if they hope to bag chips at the end of the flight.

The end of the flight, which also serves as the money bubble, has come into view now that the field is down under 200 players. The top 103 finishers will advance to tomorrow’s Day 2 so the tension will only mount from here.

Now that 10 levels of play are in the books on Day 1G, there are 239 players left in the running. This flight gathered a whopping 683 entries, which put 13.7 million in chips in play. So it comes as no surprise that the frenetic pace seen during the early levels has subsided now that the stacks are deep and the players have settled in for the long haul to the end of the flight.

Here is an updated look at the field:

    Leacock leads after eight levels

    • Level: 9
    • Small Blind: 400
    • Big Blind: 800
    • BB Ante: 800
    • Chip Average: 40.2K

    August 25, 2019 | 4:53pm | Playground

The late registration and re-entry period has just closed on Day 1G, with a total of 684 entries. There are still 348 players in the running in this wild flight, and Robin Leacock leads them all with a stack of more than triple the current chip average.

Now that late registration is closed, the cutoff for Day 2 has been set at the top 103 players from Day 1G. There remains a lot of poker to be played before that point is reached, and with so many chips in play we may see a new overall chip leader emerge.

Helped along by 127 re-entries, the total number of entries on Day 1G now exceeds 600. There remains slightly more than an hour in the late registration and re-entry period so expect the re-entries and new players to keep adding up. During last year’s edition of the WSOP-C, Day 1G of the Colossus reached a staggering number of entries. Could this flight set a new Colossus record?

Here’s another look at the field:

Funari out to the early chip lead

    • Level: 5
    • Small Blind: 150
    • Big Blind: 300
    • BB Ante: 300

    • Entries: 556
    August 25, 2019August 25, 2019 | 2:33pm | Playground

Day 1G has already brought out more than 550 entries, and Christopher Funari leads them all after having more than quadrupled his starting stack in the first four levels of play.

The number of entries just kept climbing during the first break in the action, putting more than 11,000,000 in chips in play this afternoon. There remains roughly two hours in the late registration and re-entry period so we are likely to see more than 600 entries before this colossal starting flight winds down.

Here are the chip leaders up to this point:

The field in Day 1G keeps growing and shows no signs of slowing down. After little more than one hour of play, the number of entries jsut eclipsed the 450-mark. The number of re-entries now stands at 32, showing that most players who hit the rail in the early going opted to re-enter, a trend that will likely continue throughout the day. With over 9,000,000 in chips in play, this flight offers great value and the potential to run up a huge stack for Day 2.

Here’s a glimpse of the field from level 2:

    August 25, 2019 | 12:50pm | Playground

After only one level of play, Day 1G has already brought out the largest starting field to date in this edition of the Colossus. The cashiers and tournament staff showed their professionalism by quickly and efficiently handling the huge line up of players and making sure that everyone got in on the action without much of a wait.

The players sprinted out of the gate today in a wild first level of play. The number of entries just passed the 350-mark, and there have been 6 re-entries so far. There are nearly four hours left in the late registration and re-entry period, and players continue to file in to the tournament hall at a steady rate. With fast action, a huge field and a massive amount of chips in play, this flight is one you don’t want to miss!

    Here comes Day 1G!

    August 25, 2019 | 11:52am | Playground

Event #1 of the WSOP-C Playground, the $300 + $30 Colossus, rolls on this afternoon with the final day of starting flights. Day 1G starts at noon and promises to be another busy flight that will see hundreds of players take to the felts to battle it out until 15% of the starting field remains. Each Day 1 features an extended late registration and re-entry period so players have until 4:30pm to join this flight. Day 1H gets underway at 4:30pm, and the final starting flight for the Colossus, Day 1I, which is a turbo flight, runs tonight at 9:00pm.

The Colossus has already brought out some huge fields in the previous starting flights, which has allowed 308 players to secure their spots in Day 2. Click here to see the combined Day 1 results.

The Colossus is an unlimited re-entry event; players can enter multiple starting flights. Should they qualify for Day 2 more than once, they will resume play with their largest stack and receive the corresponding cash prize for any other stacks, which will be forfeited. There are sure to be many players in the field this afternoon who are seeking to improve on their results from previous Day 1s so don’t be surprised if the action gets off to a very fast start today.

    Good luck to all!
