Super High Roller Champion: Jon VanFleet

    August 29, 2019August 31, 2019 | 5:28am | Playground

Event #4 of the WSOP-C Playground was the $5,000 + $300 Super High Roller that featured a $250,000 guaranteed prize pool. After the late registration and re-entry period came to a close, there were 78 entries in total that helped to smash the guarantee and create a $378,300 prize pool, which paid the top 9 finishers, offering a min-cash of $12,000 and a top prize of $110,000.

Some of the top players from around North America participated in this event and the competition was tough. Play resumed for Day 2 today and one by one the eliminations happened until finally the final table was formed, with none other than Toronto pro and Playground regular Mike Leah in the lead.

Leah ran into a bad hand when he flopped top pair and made trips on the river, only to find out that his opponent, Jon VanFleet, had flopped a set and rivered a boat, crippling Leah who end up busting out in seventh place.

Heads-up for the ring was between Jon “apestyles” VanFleet and Jack Shea. When it started, VanFleet had a massive lead over Shea but that finally turned around after an hour or so of play. The battle between the two players seemed to be endless. It lasted almost a full three hours.

When it finally came to an end, Shea shoved King of Diamonds Jack of Hearts and was called by VanFleet who woke up with Ace of Clubs 4 of Clubs.

The board came 5 of Spades 3 of Clubs 10 of Hearts Queen of Clubs 6 of Diamonds and just like that, the Super High Roller crowned a champion, Jonathan VanFleet.

After having Jon VanFleet as the chip leader for the last coupkle of lebvels, Jack Shea has just taken the lead after winning a huge hand against VanFleet.

Both players got all of the chips into the middle with Shea out in front and staying out in front.

Shea: King of Diamonds Queen of Hearts
    VanFleet: King of Spades 8c

The board ran out Jack of Clubs 10 of Hearts 7 of Hearts 6 of Clubs Ace of Clubs and all of the sudden, Shea has a commanding lead over VanFleet.

Jamie Sequeira comes in for all of the Playground festivals and is a fun player to have on the table. He fought his way to third place by doing his best to stay out of trouble on the final table and ended up laddering up the pay jumps.

His last hand came when he put the chips in with Ace of Spades 7 of Spades and was called by Shea who had Jack of Hearts 10 of Clubs and it looked good for for Sequeira on the 3 of Clubs 2 of Hearts 5 of Spades flop, but Shea hit the Jack of Spades on the turn and the 6 of Clubs river was of no help to Sequeira, and that ended his day.

    Third place: Jamie Sequeira, $52,300

Play is now heads-up between Jack Shea and chip leader Jon VanFleet.

As Martin Kozlov’s stack was dwindling down, when he picked up King of Hearts Queen of Hearts he decided that it was the time to go all in. Unfortunatly for him, Jon VanFleet woke up with Ace of Hearts Jack of Spades and he made the call.

VanFleet smashed the Jack of Diamonds 3 of Hearts Jack of Clubs flop and the 2 of Diamonds on the turn and 8 of Clubs on the river were just formalities.

    Fourth place: Martin Kozlov, $41,000

The players who have been less active have had pressure on their stacks as the blinds are getting to them and Anthony Ribeiro was the next player who just couldn’t make it to the end.

Ribeiro picked up 10 of Hearts 10 of Clubs and was called by Jack Shea holding Ace of Hearts 10 of Spades

Ribeiro seemed to be in good shape until the Queen of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 4 of Clubs flop. The Jack of Hearts on the turn and the 2 of Spades on the river were of no help to Ribeiro and he was sent to collect his payout slip while Shea added more to his stack.

We took a short break and when we returned, Mike Leah had lost most of his stack. After the hand against VanFleet when he lost to a flopped set and rivered boat, he was severely damaged and the players said that he tried to make a move going all in with A2 and was called by Jack Shea who woke up with AK.

He then shoved 2 of Diamonds 2 of Clubs and was called by VanFleet holding King of Clubs Jack of Hearts and he found a double-up on the 8 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts 6 of Diamonds 3 of Spades board but then lost on the next hand when he shoved 6 of Diamonds 6 of Clubs and found calls by both VanFleet and Shea, but Shea was holding Jack of Clubs Jack of Diamonds and Leah just couldn’t find a way to hit the board.

    Seventh place: Mike Leah, $20,000

With the blinds at 30,000/60,000 action folded to Mike Leah seated in the hijack position who raised it up to 130,000 and found a call from Jon “apestyles” VanFleet on the button.

The flop came 5 of Spades Queen of Hearts 9 of Spades and Leah elected to check. VanFleet gave it thought and threw in a bet of 105,000, Leah made the call.

The turn brought the 2 of Clubs and once again Leah checked. VanFleet responded this time with a bet of 450,000 and again was called by Leah.

On the river the dealer put out the Queen of Spades and leah checked. VanFleet ended up reaching for a large stack of chips and he moved them forward. The dealer counted the stack: 1,700,000. Leah made the call.

VanFleet opened 9 of Clubs 9 of Hearts for a flopped set and rivered boat, while Leah just shook his head and showed the Queen of Hearts.

Mark Scacewater was the second smallest stack when the final table had started and the blinds were shrinking his stack until finally he got it in and found a call by Mike Leah.

Scacewater: 10 of Spades 8 of Hearts
Leah: King of Spades 7 of Diamonds

The board ran out King of Diamonds 8 of Spades 4 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 6 of Hearts and Scacewater was sent to the tournament desk to collect his payout slip.

After losing Kauvsegan Ehamparam in 11th place, the tournament went onto the bubble of the final table. Finally the fatal hand came to be when Sopheak Heang put all of his chips into the middle and was snap called by Mike Leah.

Heang:: Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs
Leah: King of Clubs King of Spades

Heang needed to hit an ace, a flush or maybe trip eights. The flop came 4 of Hearts King of Spades Queen of Spades and that gave Leah a set of kings and the 2 of Hearts on the turn and Jack of Clubs on the river did not change the fate of Heang who headed to the rail.

Leah had a top stack before this hand and after he eliminated Heang, it put him into the lead with 3,962,000 chips.

Here are the chip counts of the final nine players (Note: Jean-Serge Baril was the short stack and just busted in ninth for $12,000)

Tommy Nguyen was feeling the pressure and put his chips in holding Ace of Hearts Jack of Hearts. David Ormsby made the call with 8 of Hearts 8 of Spades.

Nguyen hit a jack on the 10 of Spades Jack of Diamonds Queen of Spades flop, but Ormsby made a straight on the 9 of Diamonds turn. The 7 of Hearts on the river didn’t change the situation and Nguyen made his way to the rail, just a little shy of the money.

None the less, as all players know, tournament poker can be cruel and things can change around on the turn of a dime. While writing up this post, Ormsby has also now been sent to the rail although we don’t have the details of how it went down.

Jamie Sequeira opened in the cutoff position from 24,000 to 55,000. Sopheak Heang 3-bet on the button to 135,000. Sequeira thought about it for about 20 seconds and decided to flat call.

The flop was the 2 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs and Sequeira check-called a bet of 155,000 from Heang.

On the turn the dealer peeled the King of Spades. Sequeira moved all in. After a brief moment, Heang folded. He then said to Sequeira “the king helped”? Sequeira replied “I had queens, I think I was good?”.  Heang smiled and muttered “I’m not sure that you had queens”.

Poker. Everyone always tells the truth.

As this was being written up, Chanracy Khun and Pierre Paul Paulin were seen exiting in 15th and 14th place.
